Online Accounting or a Local Accountant? A Comparison for Businesses in Ankara

Documents are digital and returns are filed electronically, so you can work with an accountant without ever visiting. So when does an office-based accountant make a difference? An impartial comparison for businesses in Ankara.

8 min read

Short answer: If you send documents digitally and your business runs routinely, online accounting may be enough. When you face a tax audit, company formation, a change of partners or complex advisory needs, an accountant you can meet in person saves time and reduces risk. For businesses in Ankara the most practical solution is a hybrid arrangement: day-to-day work done digitally, with meetings at the office when needed. There is no difference in fees; both models are subject to the same legal tariff.

“Online accounting” ads have multiplied in recent years. The model, where you upload invoices through an app and your returns are filed remotely, looks attractive especially to young entrepreneurs and freelancers. On the other hand, in a city like Ankara there are real benefits to being able to sit down with your accountant at an office a few metro stops away.

In this article we treat the two models not as rivals but as options for different needs. We share criteria, tables and examples to help you decide which suits you.

What is online accounting?

Online accounting is a service model in which documents are sent through digital channels and communication mostly happens by message, email and video call. Invoices and receipts are uploaded as photos or files, bank transactions are imported through integrations and returns are filed electronically. The service is still provided by a licensed certified public accountant; the difference is in how it is delivered. The filing calendar, payment reminders and reports are usually tracked in a dashboard or mobile app, which speeds up routine work and reduces paperwork.

What does an office-based accountant offer?

An office-based accountant also does most of the work digitally today. The difference is that you can sit down and work on documents together when needed, get physical support for tasks that require a visit to the tax office or trade registry, and build a face-to-face relationship with a team that knows you.

The fee row matters: an accountant providing an online service cannot charge below the minimum fee tariff either. We shared the 2026 amounts for Ankara in accountant fees in Ankara. So “much cheaper because it’s online” usually means the scope has been narrowed.

These scores are not statistics but our assessment based on our office’s experience. They may differ by provider.

Who is online accounting suitable for?

  • Self-employed professionals and software developers working alone
  • Sole proprietorships with low document volume and routine transactions
  • Business owners who live outside Ankara or travel often
  • People comfortable with digital tools who prefer to ask questions in writing

What these groups have in common is predictable work. A similar number of invoices is issued each month, similar expenses arise and filings proceed routinely. Unless the business model changes, the need to meet in person rarely arises; when it does, a video call is often enough.

When does an office-based accountant make a difference?

  • Tax audits or requests for explanation: Reviewing documents together and preparing for an audit goes much faster in person.
  • Company formation and changes: Signatures at the trade registry, general meetings and share transfers require physical coordination.
  • Staff and payroll: Hiring and leaving, severance calculations and labour inspections may call for one-to-one meetings.
  • Big decisions: Decisions such as changing company type, obtaining an investment incentive or adding a partner become clear when discussed at the table with the figures.

Why location matters in Ankara: the Kızılay example

The benefit of an office-based accountant is directly proportional to how easy the office is to reach. Kızılay is where the Ankaray and metro lines meet, reachable directly by public transport from almost every district. For a business owner working in Çankaya, Yenimahalle, Keçiören, Etimesgut or Mamak, getting to an accounting office in Kızılay often takes less time than getting to one in the same district.

A central location makes it easier to fit appointments into a lunch break and hand over documents the same day. With many public institutions nearby, the area is also a practical starting point for official procedures.

The hybrid model: the best of both worlds

In practice the most efficient solution for most businesses is to combine the two models. Invoices and receipts are sent digitally, e-Invoice and e-Archive integration is set up and questions are asked by message. A few times a year, for example in provisional tax periods or for year-end planning, you meet at the office. When there is an important decision or an audit, you work in person. We explain how to set up e-documents in e-Invoice or e-Archive.

If you choose an online service, watch out

If you opt for online accounting, make sure the provider really is a licensed professional and that it is clear who is responsible. Some platforms provide only software; the certified public accountant signing the returns is a separate person. Get answers to these questions in writing:

  • Which certified public accountant signs my returns, and what are their licence details?
  • When I have a question, will I talk to software support or to the accountant?
  • If I leave the service, how are my books, archive of returns and e-document authorisations handed over?
  • Is support in situations such as a tax audit included or charged extra?

How to switch between models

Moving from an online service to an office-based accountant, or the other way round, is the same process as changing accountants. The new accountant signs the agreement, the books and archive of returns are collected from the previous professional, and e-Filing and e-document authorisations are assigned to the new person. Timing the switch for the start of a month after a filing period closes makes things easier. For the step-by-step process see our guide to switching accountants.

Three things to ask yourself before you choose

  1. How many times in the past year did you need to meet your accountant in person?
  2. Do you have plans next year such as a company change, hiring staff or an investment?
  3. When a letter arrives from the tax office, who do you want at your side, and how quickly?

If the answer to the first is “never” and the others are “no”, online accounting will most likely do the job. If even one answer differs, a certified public accountant with an office you can reach is the safer choice. We collected general selection criteria in how to choose an accountant in Ankara.

Frequently asked questions

Is online accounting cheaper?

The legal minimum fee is the same; an accountant providing an online service cannot charge below the tariff either. Any price difference usually comes from the scope of the service.

Can I work with my accountant without ever meeting?

Yes. Documents can be sent digitally and returns are filed electronically. But in situations such as an audit, a formation or important decisions, meeting in person speeds things up.

I am outside Ankara; can I work with an accountant in Kızılay?

Yes. Even if your tax office is not in Ankara, the process does not change because returns are filed electronically. When needed, you meet by video call.

Are my documents safe with online accounting?

Security depends on the system used. Ask whether documents are sent over encrypted channels, whether access is limited to authorised people and whether personal data is processed in line with Turkey’s data protection law (KVKK).

Can I visit the office in Kızılay without an appointment?

For quick document drop-offs it is usually possible, but we recommend booking an appointment for advisory meetings. That way your file is prepared in advance and the meeting is more productive.

If I work with an office-based accountant, do I have to bring documents by hand?

No. Most office-based accountants also accept documents digitally. The office is an extra option you use only when you need it.

Summary

Choosing between online accounting and an office-based accountant is not a choice between speed and security; set up properly, both are fast and secure. What decides it is how often your business needs in-person support.

At Ankara Muhasebeci we work in a hybrid way from our office in Kızılay: day-to-day work happens digitally and we meet at the office when needed. Get in touch to discuss the arrangement that suits you.

Whichever model you choose, make sure communication channels and response times are written into your agreement. A good working arrangement depends less on where the service is delivered from than on how clearly it is defined.
